Earlier this year I came across a beautiful block print tablecloth that I immediately fell in love with. The price point was a little high so I tucked the idea away in my head thinking it would be a fun DIY project to try some day. I love creating seasonal tablescapes and when I had the opportunity to work with a company to create a fall tablescape, I knew this would be the perfect time to create my DIY Block Print Table Runner.

I searched on Amazon for a plain linen tablecloth but none of them seemed to be quite what I was looking for. So I went to JoAnn Fabrics and found the most beautiful linen blend fabric. It wasn’t large enough though, so I decided to create a runner instead!

SUPPLES FOR DIY BLOCK PRINT TABLE RUNNER

The stamp I found on Etsy and it’s a dill flower which I just love the delicate look of. There are so many different stamps you could use – the options here are endless!

STEP 1

Cut your fabric to size. I cut mine about 18″ wide and about 24″ longer than our table so there would be about a foot extra hanging down on each end.

STEP 2

Pull the loose strands of fabric from the sides to create a frayed look. You can pull as much or as little as you want to get your desired look.

STEP 3

Using a medium sized paint brush, paint each part of your stamp the color you’d like it to be. I used two colors, one for the flowers and one for the stem. I recommend using a scrap piece of fabric to practice first. This will help you decide what colors you like and also how much paint and pressure to apply.

I used these three colors, mixing the brown into each to make it more muted. The green is called “Moss”.

STEP 4

Press your stamp down on the fabric firmly and be sure to push down on all sides to create a full design.

STEP 5

Repeat! If you want to measure you certainly can, but I eye balled it and did an offset pattern until I reached the end.

I absolutely LOVE how this turned out! It was such a simple project but feels so thoughtful and beautiful. Each stamp is a little different and not perfect which makes it feel more handmade and unique too. The art of block printing has been around for ages and I’m glad that it’s something we’re starting to see again in the design world. It makes me want to design my own fabrics ? Maybe some day!
